The exhibition 'De Eender en Ander dan Anders' sits behind glass, four windows where light comes from. That light presents itself as a vision: crystal clear yet fragmented. What can you see and what can't you see? Like the sun that is too bright to look into, while its reflection on the water can be soft. A light source and its reflection are the same but different.

Two windows are from art space Het Langhuis and the other two are from the bridge keeper's house on the Menistenbrug. These two complementary video installations are active daily in the evenings between 7 and 10 p.m. Runs from December 3rd to January 9th. Delen - cinepoem

"An inside out conversation on the ambiguity of freedom"

Delen (in English 'Share') is a short poetry film; 02:22. It premiered end of June at Vesuvius International Film Fest in Italy where it won ‘best video poetry award’ and will be further screened at several poetry cinema film festivals internationally. As well as a Dutch cinema tour as part of the best-of-program from NPF. At first this was a live scene as part of the 5th of May program Rondom Vrijheid. Though now in a video remake, it has landed on its own feet.

Programma Rondom Vrijheid

Proud to say that I have been given the role of director in creating the program Rondom Vrijheid (Around Freedom) together with creative producer Bart Jansen. A live event in the morning of May 5th as a benchmark between remembrance day and the national celebration of liberation in the Netherlands. A production full of voices, sounds, images and actions. It was live broadcasted on TV with the Zwolle Dominican Church as a stage. A project commissioned by Provincie Overijssel.

Assisting Sardines - video performance

Assisting Sardines, or in Dutch: Dienen van Sardienen, is probably my most conceptual piece. A 01:14 minute video performance captured in the autumn of 2022. First presentation during Weerlicht in November 2023 in Deventer; location Welle, projected top down on the ferry pontoon. Hit CC for captions in English.

DONT DO IT - exhibition

Upcoming exhibition of Marko de Kok and myself at CW12 in Zwolle, The Netherlands. The exhibited works are a combination of existing pieces and for the occasion assembled spatial works. We do not make it explicit who made what and present a joint intervention with a joint motivation. “We bring the spectator onto a border, in a direct sense but also in terms of his own willpower. An invitation to re-calibrate and broaden your view. ” We see light objects, a kinetic video installation, modulation of the physical environment and also a small yet infinite performance. All this connected by an endless ribbon.

The Reed flute - video - Trailer

The Reed flute is a video installation after a poem by the Persian mystic Rumi that bares the same title. It is a dual-channel video work of just over 18 minutes completed in 2022.

Here is the trailer of the performance Tuimelaar that premiered in July in Zalen Schaaf in Leeuwarden in The Netherlands during Explore the North Summer Sessions.

If you took Tuimelaar for an instrument, you could say he rolls. If you took Tuimelaar to be a behaviour, you could say he moves in sync. But what drives him? You could say Van Hulst’s hands or the words of Bruinja, but it’s not that. Love sets things in motion and places both men in the hands of a fate which they can only subject themselves to. The battle between resistance and acceptance shapes Tuimelaar and provides gravity to everything on stage.

The Reed flute - impression

The Reed flute is a video installation based on Rumi's poem that bares the same title. A mystical experience full of visual associations at the intersection between real and unreal. A happening in which the audience, from a non-dualistic first person perspective, is taken along to places where they have never been though yet are familiar with.

And all through the material: reed. - In the slider above you see some selected stills for an impression.

At this stage The Reed flute is a work in progress / research project for an immersive narrative. This multimedia project will result in a video-installation for two screens and perhaps also in a film. Gratefully made possible by Het Filmfonds and Het Stimuleringsfonds.

Zemsta - movie

This spring I designed and created the title sequence of the theatre to movie translation of Zemsta (revenge) for the Polish national television. This is a tale by Aleksander Fredro written in 1833 and is deeply embedded in the Polish culture. This version is directed by Redbad Klynstra-Komarnicki. Also on Teatr Telewizji.

Originals

From the 9th of May until the 25th of August Douwe Dijkstra and I are exhibiting the fruits of a year of research on cultural identity in Kunstruimte Tetem in Enschede. Sponsored by Provincie Overijssel. The show is called Originals and consists out of two video-installations: Kijkersfile and an adapted installation version of No More Masterpieces. More info…

Foarloplich Lân - Cinematic version

Foarloplich Lân is the title of a piece consisting out of video projected on the Oldehove in Leeuwarden made by Jules van Hulst, a poem by Tsead Bruinja and music and speech by Herman van Veen.An initiatief by Lân fan Taal as part of the main program of Leeuwarden European Capital of Culture 2018.

Now in its cinema-shape and abridged remake it can be viewed on the conventional screen. Subtitles in English, German and Frisian.

It premiered in 2021 on the Nederlands Poëzie Film Festival and has been selected for a couple of poetry film festivals since. It received the Epstein Special Mention Award by Festival Fotogenia in Mexico City in 2022 and was nominated by Zebra Poetry Film Festival in Berlin, also in 2022.

Hybris - kinetic video installation

Hybris is the name of a kinetic video installation accompanied by a small performance and a musical composition by Daniel Cross written for headphones. It was commissioned by Trendbureau Overijssel and Atelier Overijssel and curated by Kunstenlab to envision one of four possible future scenarios on how my local province can, within their policy, relate to the landscape and what this means for us living in it. All of this to encourage law-makers, politicians, entrepreneurs and government workers to make better choices. 

Conceptually the installation regards the following statement:

“Men has full confidence that technological innovations of the future will address the problems of that future in an adequate way“

Initially created and presented at Klooster Nieuw Sion during a conference called Situatie Gewijzigd (Altered Circumstances) in Februari and up next and renewed at Pop-up Museum Verdronken Land. Compagnietheater Amsterdam 25 and 26 of May organise by the Ludwig Ensemble.

This is what happens: “A moment dazzled by self-delusion or selfishness prior to overstep a border.“

Foarloplich Lân - Cultural Capital

Foarloplich Lân is the title of a new piece consisting out of video projected on the Oldehove in Leeuwarden made by me, a poem by Tsead Bruinja and music and speech by Herman van Veen and will be shown for two months in the public domain starting the 2nd of February. An initiatief by Lân fan Taal as part of the main program of Leeuwarden Cultural Capital 2018. 

'We get to see a changeful terrain, upon which the wind continuously blows, though never from the same angle, captured by a substantive striped sock.'

Depot - music theatre piece

Depot is the title of a production by 33 ⅓ Collective (in this case Douwe Dijkstra and me) in collaboration with composers / musicians Jornt Duyx and Brechtje van Dijk. Last week we performed a pilot version of this piece at the Operadagen Rotterdam in Worm.

Depot is a music-theatre piece about changing the context of opera scenery that is hidden in depots. In this case props by the Nederlandse Reisopera. What does the use and reuse of this material tell us about opera?

Owen Wingrave - videodesign

Just finished working on the video-content for the piece Owen Wingrave by Benjamin Britten. A production by Academie de l'Opera de Paris. It premiered the 19th of November at Opera Bastille in Paris.

Opening Classical:NEXT 2016

On the end of May Classical:NEXT 2016 had its grand opening show for which I did the art-direction and videodesign in the Jurriaanse zaal in Rotterdam. Classical:NEXT unites the global classical community, creating a worldwide movement to explore potential paths forward into the future. No More Masterpieces

No More Masterpieces is the title of a collaboration between 33 ⅓ Collective (in this case artisticly Douwe Dijkstra and me) and Ensemble Intercontemporain inspired by the manifest 'Le Théâtre et son double' by Antonin Artaud. The project consists of a live performance of the piece 'Concerto Séraphin' by Wolfgang Rihm, enhanced by video projections by us on a kinetic screen made byThierry van Raaij.
